Edge computing is on the rise, the need to move logic closer to the source of data and process data inline, without the need to depend solely on cloud resources. While vastly different from a computing perspective, some of the same principles apply when looking to develop edge-native microservices, however, edge computing requires a smaller technical footprint, smaller than most existing frameworks and technologies can offer. Existing technologies cannot be retrofitted and expected to perform efficiently at the edge. We’ll explore how edge-native microservices can be built using Project Flogo, a lightweight, open source framework built from the ground up with size and performance in mind. We’ll explore the modern application architecture and how multi-cloud, edge and serverless compute is the new normal and why you need open technologies to avoid vendor lock-in.Lastly, we’ll tie together the need for lightweight, performance frameworks for the next wave of cloud computing -- serverless architectures and the transition from microservices to functions, and how a smaller unit of work can become more efficient both in terms of economics and development speed.
