OPEN TALK (API): You're Doing Microservices Wrong

Key Takeaways:
  • The “ilities” (reliability, availability, scalability, etc.)
  • The network is not reliable and latency is not zero
  • True scaling of stateful resources and state ownership (local vs remote state)
  • The enterprise data model fallacy
  • Bounded contexts, the ubiquitous language, and microservices
Microservices have changed how we develop and deploy code as well as how we diagnose and debug production issues. While many of the changes from the past era of monolithic applications have been welcome in terms of development speed and ease of deployment, microservices have introduced a whole new set of complications that were never considered previously.
In this session we will briefly cover several basic fallacies of distributed computing and how they affect the development of microservices. Specifically, we will cover how to handle issues related to reliability of external dependencies (such as other microservices) as well as issues related to latency that can wreak havoc on your microservice. Further, we will cover issues related to proper microservice boundaries and how to determine which microservice should handle a particular kind of behavior and where data should live.
The OPEN TALK will give a quick introduction to these concepts and the PRO WORKSHOP version of this material will go into specific techniques designed to reduce or altogether eliminate many of the challenges associated with microservices.
