In the summer of 2018, after exponential growth in our microservices ecosystem, our deepening service call graph was causing increasing latency overhead. We took a hard look in the mirror and realized we were approaching the end of the runway for our Hub and Spoke API Gateway model. We began a journey to migrate our 600+ microservices from our API Gateway to a distributed Service Mesh running on Kubernetes. Along the way, we discovered that building an enterprise-wide Service Mesh spanning discrete network segments comes with a host of challenges. In making a platform provide end-to-end encryption, we defined a pattern for federated workload identities and learned to manage a federated set of mesh control planes. In this talk, we will share these learnings and an open-source technology that made it all possible - Admiral.
